about the sessions ↓
”I teach a professional-level contemporary technique centre class. The class is a synthesis of all of the ideas and movement practices that currently fascinate me.
I am inspired by my past and present teachers Alison Denham (Pilates), Justine A. Chambers, Emmalena Fredriksson, Tiffany Tregarthen, David Raymond, Patricia Miner, Marc Boivin (contemporary dance), Lindsay Harpham (dancer/Kinesiologist) and Andrew Swartz (my coach at Madlab School of Fitness), amongst many others.
Usually my class will start gently on the floor and build in verticality and intensity. It is important to me that my class has a logical progression - that students’ bodies feel ready for the next exercise when it arrives. Because my first dance language is ballet, you’ll notice some things that look like pliés, tendus and rond de jambes at times. I taught Yoga for a decade, so you’ll notice some of that, and some Pilates too. You’ll see some of my current passion, which is strength training. At times we dance quite specifically to the music, and sometimes dancers will find their own phrasing. I will teach dancer/Kinesiologist Linday Harpham’s stability/proprioception sequence and do a bit of her plyometrics material too.
I strive to create a rigorous and playful environment where we can all feel free to make our own specific choices.
No matter what, the soundtrack will be good.”
about the artists ↓
Kate has danced for around 50 different choreographers and directors over the past 20-or-so years. She spent the first ten years of her career in Toronto/Tkaronto working as a dancer, choreographer and educator, and co-directing three female-led collectives, all with different missions/mandates. She also walked dogs, babysat children, taught Yoga, cleaned a woodwinds repair shop, and won a Dora Mavor Moore award for her work on Gotta Go Church, choreographed by Valerie Calam. Based in Vancouver on the unceded and traditional territories of the Coast Salish Peoples since 2012, she works as a dancer/collaborator with Company 605, Justine A. Chambers, Jeanette Kotowich and Tara Cheyenne Performance, amongst others. Since 2016 she has been Associate Artistic Director of Modus Operandi, where she teaches and mentors a group of exceptionally talented emerging dance artists. Kate's own choreographic work has been shown most recently at Boombox, Dancing on the Edge and the EDAM Choreographic Series. Kate teaches because she is still fully engaged in training and learning.
who is this for ↓
This class is for self-identifying professional-level contemporary dancers. To me this means that over the past few years, you have made a significant investment of time and energy in your practice. Or it could mean perhaps that it has been a couple of years since you attended class, but somewhere in your background you have years of rigorous training experience, and you feel that you can handle yourself in a pro-level class.
